I began my career in 2006 as a baby nurse at VCU Health Systems in Richmond VA. During my 6 years there, I worked in the Neuroscience Unit and then the Surgical Trauma ICU. What I learned during my time as an RN has been invaluable as I incorporate a holistic approach into my practice consistently.  The relationship between the mind and body has always fascinated me and in 2012, I graduated VCU with my Adult Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner Degree.

I began working in Henrico Jail and found I was passionate about the perception of the mental health community as well as the impact of trauma on most of the clients I served there. Excitedly, I asked the Sheriff for a community garden, yoga, art therapy, more comprehensive therapeutic groups, and pet therapy for rescues and inmates in addition to their substance abuse program and continuing education opportunities.  I quickly came to understand these ideas were not going to come to fruition. I decided to take the time to know my clients and understand them in addition to medication management.  I made my own library which I restocked continuously…because it was jail.

After 6 years in the army, I came home in 2006.  A tour in Iraq motivated me to return to school and pursue a career path in healthcare.  I worked at VCU Health Systems for 15 years as an Oncology Nurse and loved working with patients and their families during their difficult journey.  They were newly diagnosed with leukemias and lymphomas or experienced complications of their care while in treatments for other cancers and I felt like I helped them through this trauma. Between my time in the Army and as an oncology nurse, I spent a lot of time with people at their best and saw them at their most challenging moments. Those experiences have helped to shape my outlook on life as well as medicine, and I made the decision to go back to school and change my focus to mental health.  It is my hope to help people engage and find contentment in their lives prior to being confronted with a life-changing moment like a cancer diagnosis.  I realize that we all come with our own stories and have travelled our own paths; my goal is to meet you wherever you are on that path and work with you to get you where you want to go.

What brought me to Monarch Mental Health and Wellness were the pieces of our logo: Growth, Love, Strength, Healing, and the Golden Crown. Each of us is on a journey, and it is my honor to join you along the way.  We all deserve self-love and an understanding of our strength and potential.   I can help patients both realize their growth and help them continue to flourish.  Most importantly, we all deserve to heal compassion.  The COVID pandemic has renewed our appreciation of the challenges we each face, but it has also brought to light that much more healing needs to occur.   I hope to bring mind, body and spirit together, through medication management, therapy and health promotion.  Let me help you move forward on the path of self-discovery and acceptance, growth and healing.  I look forward to walking with you on your individual journey.

I am privileged to provide care to patients across the lifespan and intersections of identity primarily focusing on those 14 years of age and up.  Through in-person and virtual appointments, I treat various mental health conditions and emotional challenges with an open mind, compassionate attitude and zeal for the individual I am treating.  My focus is on depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD, Bipolar Disorder, ADHD, personality disorders, Schizophrenia, and other mood disorders, but I am excited to expand my skills and focus

As a psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, it is my goal to advocate for patients and to manage their treatment with understanding, compassion, and attention to holistic care.  As every patient is unique, so are their treatment plans.  I will help you explore the underlying causes of symptoms and if medication is right for you.  Together we can develop a tailored treatment plan that will help you set and reach your goals.  By incorporating psychotropic medication, lifestyle modification, psychotherapy, cognitive reframing, coping skills development, mindfulness, and nutrition recommendations, I am confident patient wellness goals can be achieved.

Hi! I’m Julie, a psychiatric nurse practitioner with a commitment to helping individuals achieve mental wellness.  My journey in healthcare has shown me that a holistic approach to mental health is essential.  My approach encompasses medication management, when necessary, but I am equally devoted to exploring non-pharmacological interventions that feel most comfortable for the patient.  I advocate for lifestyle interventions as a cornerstone of mental well-being. Good nutrition, regular exercise, and mindfulness practices can play a pivotal role in improving mental health. Just as you might have a personal trainer for your body, I see my role as helping you develop and nurture your mind. Mental health is an investment in your mind, and it deserves the same attention and care as any other aspect of your health

One of my core values is to educate my patients so they understand the "why" behind every decision.  Informed patients are empowered patients.  I believe that knowledge is the key to self-empowerment, and I'm passionate about ensuring my patients are fully informed about their treatment options.

I specialize in the treatment of various mental health conditions in the adult population including Bipolar Disorder, anxiety, depression, trauma, ADHD, and other mental disorders.  My goal is to work with you to develop a personalized plan that addresses your specific needs and empowers you to overcome life's challenges.

Outside of work, you'll find me walking in nature with my furry companions.  I have a loving goldendoodle who's a retired service dog and a rescue lab who's happiest when on one of his "sniffaries".
